OT/PPP Toggle 2.2.1 toggles the state of the PPP connection using Open Transport PPP. If it's closed, it opens it using the currently active configuration as set in the PPP control panel. If it's already open, it closes it. Using the Auto-Open feature, it can also open any application or file you want once the connection is made (up to two of them). Just click on it in a launcher or select it from the Apple menu and it opens or closes the connection. It uses less than 10kb on disk and 200K of RAM (and only when actually opening or closing a connection).
Note:
The source files for OT/PPP Toggle have been lost. As I had included all the features I wanted to anyway, I will not be working on OT/PPP Toggle anymore, except as outlined in the Bugs section of this Read Me. Thanks to all of the people who helped me make this, and happy OT/PPP Toggling.
License/Warranty:
OT/PPP Toggle has no warranty whatsoever. I claim no liability for any damages or loss of data caused by this software, either directly or indirectly.
OT/PPP Toggle is free for you to use, copy, duplicate, and pass around.
HOWEVER, if you want to send me anything, especially money, it would be HUGELY appreciated, but it is not required. (I am just a starving college art student - any money I get will be put towards getting MacOS 8) Include an e-mail address or return address, and I'll send you a nice thank you note or something. You can send it to:

This Read Me must be distributed with the application, and you may not modify OT/PPP Toggle and redistrubte it under the same name. It may be included on CD-ROM compilations, including Info-Mac CD-ROMs. You may not charge for this software, other than reasonable media or download or connect time costs, unless it is part of a CD-ROM compilation or paid-access FTP archive, and in that case, no charge may be made specifically for this software - only access in general to the site or for the cost of the CD-ROM.
Quick Start:
Run the OT/PPP Toggle 2.2.1 Setup application by double-clicking on it. You will go through a short configuration process. From then on, run OT/PPP Toggle 2.2.1 itself to open or close the PPP connection. The OT/PPP Toggle Setup 2.2.1 application is for configuring OT/PPP Toggle's Auto-Open and PPP Control Panel opening features, and is not needed for normal operation. OT/PPP Toggle will use the currently active dialing and account settings in the PPP control panel.
System Requirements:
OT/PPP Toggle requires any Macintosh computer with the following minimum software:
System 7.5.3 or later
AppleScript 1.1 or later
Open Transport 1.1.1 or later
Open Transport PPP 1.0 *
* Open Transport PPP (OT/PPP) also installs the "PPP Commands" addition to AppleScript, which is required for this application to function.
Installation:
OT/PPP Toggle 2.2.1 is a standalone application intended for use either in the Apple Menu or in a launcher bar like Apple's Launcher control panel or HandyMan for Control Strip. It can, however, be used anywhere on your Macintosh since it is a standalone application.
To install it in the Apple Menu, either put it or an alias to it in the "Apple Menu Items" folder inside your System Folder.
To install it in the Apple Launcher, put it or an alias to it in the appropriate sub-folder in the Launcher Items folder found inside the System Folder.
To install it in another Launcher, follow the instructions that came with your launcher. (Note: Do not use a hot-key combination that includes the option key to launch OT/PPP Toggle 2.2.1. See the bugs section for details).
Usage:
Just click on it's launcher or select it from the Apple Menu like any other application.
When you use OT/PPP Toggle 2.2.1 to open a connection, it tries to complete the connection once, and if it encounters a problem, it offers to try again. Usually, failures are caused by incorrect modem setup or user cancellation. To have it re-dial a busy number, turn on re-dialing in the PPP Control Panel.
Once a connection is made, the PPP Control Panel opens (if you have it set to do so), the Auto-Open file (or files) is launched, and OT/PPP Toggle 2.2.1 quits.
To close a connection using OT/PPP Toggle, just launch it and it closes the connection. This also closes the PPP Control Panel, but not the Auto-Open file(s).
Bugs:
Several users have reported an error of type 1,010 that occurs whenever they try to open a connection using OT/PPP Toggle. I have been unable to solve this problem, and it appears to be a problem with certain machine configurations, software versions, etc. This problem appears to be a bug in OT/PPP itself. The Control Strip Module OT/PPP Strip includes the system extension "Breathing Room" which *MIGHT* fix the problem, but as I can't reproduce this problem on my machine, I can't promise that.
When a hot key combination that includes the option key is used to open OT/PPP Toggle 2.2.1, sometimes a "title screen" will appear and you will have to click a button to dismiss it before OT/PPP Toggle can proceed. Any AppleScript will show this when option is held while it opens. To avoid this problem, don't use option in the hot key.
MacOS 8 Incompatibility. Users of OT/PPP Toggle under MacOS 8 report that it asks for the PPP control panel every time it is used. This is most likely due to changes to AppleScript in MacOS 8. As I do not have MacOS 8, and do not have the money to buy it (hint!, hint! :) ), I will not be able to fix this problem. A workaround has been found by a user, however, which appears to solve the problem. Simply place an alias to the PPP control panel in the same folder that contains OT/PPP Toggle.
